Root Canal Treatment

Save your tooth and relieve discomfort.

Root canal treatment helps treat infection inside a tooth, relieving pain and preventing the need for extraction.

It’s a common, safe procedure that can protect your natural teeth and restore comfort and function.

Why might a root canal be needed?

Infection can reach the centre of a tooth when bacteria pass through the enamel and dentin into the dental pulp — the nerves and blood vessels inside. This can happen because of:

  • Deep cavities.
  • Previous dental treatments.
  • Tooth fractures or injuries.
  • Impact on the tooth.

Left untreated, infection can spread and cause abscesses, severe pain, or damage to surrounding teeth and bone.

Signs you might need a root canal

Not every infection causes symptoms, but common signs include:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Pain when biting or chewing.
  • Persistent toothache or throbbing.
  • Swelling near the tooth.
  • Bad taste in the mouth.
  • Grey or dark discolouration.

How do we check for infection?

We start with a thorough examination, often including X-rays. Your dentist may test temperature or pressure sensitivity and look for signs like discolouration or gum tenderness. If infection is present, we’ll explain your treatment plan step by step.

What the treatment involves

Root canal treatment removes infected tissue from inside the tooth and cleans the root canals to stop the infection. We often use advanced technology such as Waterlase, a dental laser that makes treatment more comfortable and precise.

A local anaesthetic is used, so the procedure should feel similar to having a regular filling. Some cases may require follow-up appointments to ensure the infection is fully treated before the tooth is permanently filled.

After treatment

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment can be more brittle than healthy teeth. Your dentist may recommend a crown or veneer to strengthen and protect the tooth. If a front tooth darkens after treatment, we can discuss options like whitening or veneers to restore a natural, confident smile.

Root canal treatment is a straightforward way to relieve pain and save your natural tooth. We’ll guide you through each step, answer your questions, and help you feel comfortable throughout the process.

Ready to take the next step?

If you’re experiencing discomfort, sensitivity, or have concerns about a tooth, it’s best to address it sooner rather than later.

Our team is here to guide you through the process, answer any questions, and make sure your treatment is as comfortable and straightforward as possible.
