The Observatory has been a landmark in Falmouth for over 150 years, with a rich history that reflects the town’s scientific, social, and architectural heritage.
Funded by the Cornwall Royal Polytechnic Society (The Poly), the original Observatory tower at Victoria Cottages was constructed in 1868 and meteorological readings began. However, by 1883, it was clear the site was not suitable and searches for a new site began.
In 1884, the site for the new Observatory on Western Terrace was found and purchased, with the foundation stone laid in a well-attended ceremony.
Observations began at the new site on the completion of the building in 1886, with Edward Kitto leading meteorological observations, living on-site with his family.
But things started to go wrong in 1898 when errors in the readings were found. This started many years of threatened funding, with fundraising activities and grants from The Poly repeatedly saving the Observatory from closure.
Indeed, in 1913, the Meteorological Society took over the employment of the new observer (J. B. Phillips) upon Kitto’s retirement. Phillips later offered to work for free in exchange for living rent-free to secure his job and home in the Observatory.
Over the decades, the building survived repeated funding challenges, changes in management, and the dedication of staff who went to great lengths to keep the Observatory operational.
In 1953, rising maintenance costs led to its closure as an observatory, and the building was sold as a private home. It later became a sheltered residence for the elderly, known as an Abbeyfield Society house, before operating as Alexandra’s Respite Home and then as a bed & breakfast in the early 2000s.
In 2021, the Paterson family recognised the building’s potential to become something new – a dental practice that preserves its character while giving it a modern purpose.
After a careful renovation, The Observatory Dental Practice opened in September 2022, starting with a single surgery and a dedicated team. Over the next few years, the practice expanded, adding additional surgeries and growing the team, all while respecting the historic fabric of this iconic Falmouth landmark.
From its beginnings as a hub for scientific observation to its current role in caring for the community’s smiles, The Observatory continues to be a place of purpose, connection, and heritage.
